This study has attempted an exploration of the ethical system of the book of Proverbs in which the principles of love, justice and righteousness are presented as the goal of the ethical life. The ethics of Proverbs is characterized by a building up of community (or the kingdom of God) on the ethical principles of love, and justice and righteousness, modelled upon God"s character and will. In this respect, God"s character and will are the source of the ethical system of the book of Proverbs. From this observation, it follows that the ethical view of Proverbs includes both deontological and the teleological perspectives.
In the ethical system of the book of Proverbs, the fear of Yahweh is regarded as an important virtue which functions as the initial ethical basis on which one begins to discern the ethical principle of love, justice and righteousness in actual situations. As a next step, the book of Proverbs presents the virtue of prudence as another ethical touchstone, from which one is able to discern truth and falsity, and then to put into practice the principles of love, justice and righteousness for the purpose of fulfilling the ethical goal of establishing a community.
In conclusion, while the book of Proverbs has very little to say about what is life of love, justice and righteousness, it has its unifying theme are these two virtues of prudence and the fear of Yawheh. Proverbs then brings to our attention the characteristics of prudence such as diligence, preparation for the future, restrained and careful speech, slowness to anger, and so on.
