At the beginning of the 20th century, Miguel de Unamuno(1864~1936) as a great author and a well-known philosopher in all the world is a pioneer of a ‘theology of the agony of God’. Unamuno wins a worldwide reputation, but nevertheless he is today not a well-known figure in the field of the Korean theology. According to Unamuno, the common theme that is consistently penetrating in the context of the literary philosophical theological thoughts is just the concept of the ‘human being with flesh and bone’. In this sense, in the theology of Unamuno, this human is considered to be the ultimate object of his theological thinking. This ‘human with flesh and bone’ is so-called the agonizing human.
This agonizing human is not the abstract and ideal human without flesh and bone, but it is the actual and existential human with flesh and bone, that is, it is the concrete human being. In order to overcome all the thought systems which are absorbed in the abstract and ideal human, Unamuno explores the ‘tragic feelings of life’ as an ‘agony’(congoja, 苦惱) in the horizon of his theology of the agony of God. In this theology, because the most important concept can be defined as an ‘agony’. Unamuno pursues a Christian theology through the concept of ‘agony’, namely, he places the point of his theology in the ‘agony of Christianity’ itself.
Meanwhile, an agony is the ‘tragic feelings of life’ that comes from suffering. The misery and anguish caused by suffering in life lead to the ‘tragic feelings of life’ that lasts forever. According to Unamuno, all the concepts including ‘life itself’ and ‘universe’ as ‘all’(萬有) in the world are the ‘tragic feelings of life’. This study aims to systematically identify and construct a ‘theology of the agony of God’ through the theological motif of ‘agony’ distinguishing between the hellenic/hellenistic philosophy or the European modernism based on reason [idea] and the theological thought of Unamuno based on feelings[emotions].
