This study examines how women experience the space of the subway, the most representative transportation system in Seoul, to discover what meanings they attach to the space. The meanings formulate the space into a certain ‘place.’ This study uses auto-ethnography (suitable for disclosing women’s experiences) written by the two researchers－South Korean women in their 40s and 20s, who reside in Seoul. The researchers’ experiences reveal that the subway space demands and produces ‘men without quality’ by emphasizing safety and efficiency, the virtues of modernization. At the same time, it has constructed women oppressive space logics by not recognizing patriarchism and male-centrism, the premodern social norms, as problematic, and neglects to suggest issues like sexual assault and male gaze. Ironically, however, women in the subway space, constantly drawing from internalized patriarchal orders and traditional gender roles, tend to react in passive ways. Taking these rules and norms into consideration, this study understands the subway space, the function-oriented ‘non-place,’ as a women oppressive place, which raises doubts about modernization.
