This paper discusses the influence of Baek Seok’s poetry on Yun Dong-ju’s poetry. Existing studies on the intertextuality of Yoon Dong-ju’s poetry have over-emphasized the similarity of minor details and poetic moods, and thus have exaggerated their influences. In this paper, we tried to examine closely and empirically how Baek Seok’s poetry influenced Yun’s poetic awareness.
Yoon Dong-ju seems to pay attention to the integration of the sense of life and historical imagination through Baek Seok’s poetical works A deer. He also praised the living description of life and vivid concreteness in Baek Seok’s poetry. It seems that Baek Seok’s A deer played an important role in the transition from “the world of reconciliation” to “the world of conflict” of Yoon Dong-ju’s poetry, he scrutinized into the question of the life that was weakened by daily labor and distress.
Yoon Dong-ju drew attention to the sense of life and concreteness by deeply examining Baek Seok’s A deer, but it did not continuously influence his poetry. He seems to have made more efforts to expose a sense of shame and guilty conscience that he did not participate in the destiny of the community. In “comfort” and “hospital” we ascertain the will of a poetic subject who wants to move from a superficial view and abstract pain to actual and concrete pain.
In this way, Yoon Dong-ju showed a self-reflection fixing his eyes on the passive self that kept a safe distance from the sufferings of public from 1938 to 1941. He did not directly criticize or protest outside contradictions symbolized by darkness and night. However, he recognized that it was impossible to improve any situation without breaking up the colonial system and rejected from reconciliation with himself to the end. Baek Seok’s poetry seemed to have some influence on this change of poetic awareness.
Although there is a common feature between “Before a white plastered wall” and “The night counting stars”. Baek Seok confirmed his identity through the empathy and solidarity of the poor and alienated beings at the edge of the colonial system and had a positive self-sublimation. On the other hand, Yoon Dong-ju showed the attitude of being deposited in the gloomy existential situation by recognizing the distance between the universal sufferings of the community and the self-completion of the poetic subject.
