This cross-sectional study investigates pragmatic developmental patterns of L2 route direction-giving among 36 learners of English. This study draws on speech act theory (Searle, 1976) and politeness theory (Brown & Levinson, 1987). Route direction-giving interactions are structured by initiation, route description, securing, and closing (Wunderlich & Reinelt, 1982). Route descriptions consist of semantic formulas including locative directives, descriptives, and adjuncts. In a simulated direction-giving task, learners interacted with four different addressees with whom they had varying degree of familiarity. A total of 347 direction-giving exchanges were analyzed for directives, descriptives, and adjuncts. The data revealed pragmatic developmental patterns in which the beginning learners relied on simple pre-direction-giving turns, bare imperatives and limited lexical devices. In contrast, the higher-level learners elaborated route descriptions: they established common ground with the interlocutor through predirection-giving utterances, increased the number of descriptives, and coherently organized route directions by using a range of pragmalinguistic resources. Specifically, the learners developed pragmalinguistic knowledge in the use of you+auxiliary types and if-clauses. However, the statistical results showed that all groups were not sensitive to the degree of familiarity with addressees in the use of all locative directives except for an increased use of you+auxiliary types with unknown addressees.
