Photography emerged as a new imaging media in modern days. Photographs, while they seemingly represent reality as closely as possible, can be manipulated due to the intentions of the photographer. Also collection of photographs can be arranged to give a specific impression on readers through careful positioning of them.
This treatise analyses “Remembering Twenty Years of Gyeongseong City Street Improvement Project”, the collection of photographs capturing urbanizing efforts of Gyeongseong during the 1910’s-1920’s. The collection was printed in small numbers with an aim of sharing the result of the project within the colonial power elite, and presented to the high ranking officials of the colonial government including the Governor General. The significance of it as a historical material has been ignored so far.
As pictures in the book were positioned according to comparative photograph technique, by which photos of same sites in different time-frame were put side by side, showing sites respectively before and after the project. This positioning was intended to highlight the fruits of urban planning of the colonial capital by the colonizers.
In this context, pictures in the collections fall into five categories: first, overview of city landscapes of Gyeongseong, second, the results of Namchon development project during the 1910’s, third, the results of Bukchon development project during the 1920’s, fourth, devastation of the great deluge in 1925 and reconstruction efforts, fifth, famous spots in the colonial capital.
By analyzing the photo collection, one can read how colonial elite attempted to transform Gyeongseong, and varied aspects of the capital reconstituted by the viewpoint of colonial elite.
