Report Errors
The purpose of this study is to figure out the change of Hanyangdoseong through the process of dissolution of Hanyangdoseong’s boundary. Hanyangdoseong has maintained the symbolic and practical function as a physical boundary around the center of the capital city for over 500 years of the Joseon Dynasty from late 14th century to early 20th century with continuous management. In fact, Hanyangdoseong was a defense facility that protected the area of government and the king and was the symbolic structure that distinguishes Seoul, the capital city, from the other local areas. However, Hanyangdoseong experiences changes with partial damages on the walls and gates during the past drastic historical changes (the colonial period in the 20th century, the Korean War, and the rapid modernization and urbanization). Nevertheless, major components of Hanyangdoseong are still maintained as they were with good conservation management until present. As a result, it is possible to comprehend how Hanyangdoseong’s characteristics and functions are preserved or changed. Additionally, the change in Hanyangdoseong boundary has intimate close relation to the perception and change of the boundary of the capital city. The capital area of the Joseon Dynasty was enlarged later with the extended boundary, affecting the physical change of Hanyangdoseong. This study organized the factors and aspects of the change in Hanyangdoseong after the modern era.
