According to Aristotle, eudaimonia or happiness is defined in conclusion as activity of the soul in accordance with virtue which is appealed to human function. Also he says that eudaimonia requires in addition being sufficiently equipped with external goods(ta ektos agatha) like friendship, wealth, political office, physical beauty, and good birth. The question is, does Aristotle insist whether virtue suffices for happiness or the possession of external goods should be included in his definition of eudaimonia. In other words, why does Aristotle evaluate the contribution of external goods and luck to eudaimonia? I think Aristotle’s view of the sufficiency thesis of virtue is not well harmonized with addition thesis of external goods. Accordingly, in this article I illuminate Aristotle’s view of external goods and try to reassess their value in relation to his theory of happiness and virtue.
In order to achieve this end, I focus on Aristotle’s mention that ‘it is impossible or not easy to do fine actions without the external goods’, and investigate how his announcement could be applied to the external goods. Especially concerning to the external goods by tools such as friend or wealth, I try to understand the interrelation between the external goods and the virtue by means of Aristotle’s hylomorphism. That is, I consider the external goods as matter(hyle), i.e., potential goods(dynamei agatha) on the one hand, and the virtue as form on the other, so that eudaimonia is realized by the virtuous activity by these two factors. I claim that the virtuous activity needs the external goods as tools in order to be actualized, and Aristotle acknowledges that eudaimonia needs the external goods and also at the same time preserve his formal definition of happiness as a final good consisting in virtuous activity, though the external goods have not their intrinsic or independent value.
