This study examined the way that Korean-Chinese language ability of Korean children in China appeared as additive bilingual or subtractive bilingual. Participants were 30 bilingual Korean children in China, 30 monolingual Korean children in Korea and 30 monolingual Chinese children in China from 5 to 7 years old. The bilinguals took three tests from two languages measuring phonological awareness, vocabulary comprehension, and sentence comprehension whereas the monolinguals took those of each language. As a result, Korean-Chinese bilingual children’s Korean language ability was similar or even higher than that of the Korean monolingual children in all age. However, bilingual children’s Chinese language ability was lower than that of Chinese monolingual children. The positive correlation was found between the overall ability of Korean and that of Chinese in bilingual children; in turn, only phonological awareness ability of Chinese showed a positive correlation with sentence comprehension ability of Korean in bilingual children.
