Background: The Internet of Things (IoT) technology has developed rapidly in recent years with the expansion of its service, which has resulted in changes to the methods of interaction and user interfaces. It is easily predicted that the total user experiences will undergo changes after the provision of integrated service different from its predecessors, but it is difficult to find research on user experience design reflecting the characteristics of IoT.
Methods: This study presents two major types of research to analyze the trends of user research in the IoT environment. First, it examined the issues of user experiences in HCI and IoT home and abroad and identified what had been changed and what should be taken into consideration in a design of user experiences. The investigator then reviewed the trends of current IoT research in the nation and checked how research on actual user experience were conducted.
Result: Most of the previous research has something to do with technology with a shortage of research on user experiences specialized for the IoT environment. Future research needs to cover user experiences applied to the IoT environment characterized. It is also needed to establish a mental model for users, who can be objects of a system rather than its subjects, and develop a specialized system model to address them.
Conclusion: The findings of the study are expected to serve as the basics of user understanding needed in the IoT era as a starting point for user experience designs optimized for the IoT environment.
