A study on specific literature regarding ancient Chinese conjunction ‘而’ has already been discussed by several researchers. However, there is a lack of study on the explanation of the substitution for conjunction, considering its appearance situation based on the comparison with substantive bibliographic data. In this paper, referring to bibliographic data in pre-Qin Dynasty era, including “Shi Jing (诗经)”, “Zuo Zhuan (左传)” and “Lun Yu (论语)”, I examined the appearance of conjunction ‘而’ used in each literature, and looked into some words that had a function similar to the conjunction ‘而’, what words were replaced by ‘而’ and how it ceased to exist, based on substantive data.
First, in Chapter II, I looked into the function of ‘而’ when it was used as a full word(实词) or an empty word(虚词). In Chapter III, I examined the substitution situation in comparison with the conjunction ‘而’ and ‘且’ in pre-Qin Dynasty era. Chapter IV looks into the substitution situation in comparison with the conjunction ‘而’ and ‘若/如’ in pre-Qin Dynasty era. Chapter V describes the substitution situation in comparison with the conjunction ‘而’ and ‘則’ in pre-Qin Dynasty era. I expect through a conclusion of this paper that readers will supplement more data and create more in-depth research results.
