The main purpose of this paper is to study the syntactic function of the expletives Er and Yi used in ancient texts, to review how they were developed, and to delve into the differences between them. In this paper, we have investigated the frequency of Er and Yi in order to find out how they were developed and have studied their origin in the Oracle Bones and the Bronze Inscription. Our study indicates that Er and Yi used to be nouns. After this, the function of Er was expanded into a conjunction, a preposition, a particle, and a substitute, whereas that of Yi was expanded into a conjunction, a preposition, and a verb. A crucial point to note here is that there was a continuous interchange in the use of Er and Yi. When it comes to Er, it had the main function of a conjunction, but was expended into a preposition and occurred in the sentences in the form of Yi. On the other hand, Yi was expanded into a conjunction which was also the function of Er. This phenomenon was general in those days, but after this, their role became crystal clear.
