This paper analyzed the bilingual novel Loach and Poet by Lee Seok-hoon, leading to empirical and original criticism. It was found, for example, that the novel is autobiographical and that the author’s life directly projects onto the main character. ‘Loach’ and ‘Poet’ in the title, in terms of accepting the colonial rule discourse at the end of the Japanese colonial occupation, are figurative representations of both sides of the divided Joseon literary circle. Moreover, the characters Hawng Man-su, Gye Yong-jun, and Gang Il-seon refer to Kim Jong-han, Lee Seok-hoon, and Kim Sang-yong respectively. Further, the character Lee Eung-sik is presumed to be Baek Cheol. In addition, it was clear that Sininmunhak (Budding Writer Literature) referred to Gukminmunhak (National Literature), the newspaper A referred to ‘Maeilsinbo’, and a writing ‘A story of horse that did not drink water’ meant ‘Liyangyeokji (以羊易之)’. What is more, it is revealed that the Japanese-oriented enlightenment group referred to the Nokgi Federation, claimed that the editor was Tsuda Gatashi, and that the literary association under the enlightenment group actually meant a forum ‘Organization of the new peninsula literary circle’ presented in “Nokgi.”
Furthermore, this paper focused on the fact that Kim Sang-yong was contained in the biographical dictionary of pro-Japanese collaborators, and analyzed the reason why he wrote a cooperative novel for the state of affairs in the reality, despite the fact that he was portrayed as a representative figure who protested against the acceptance of the colonial rule discourse in the novel. For this purpose, it was classified and examined Kim Sang-yong’s behaviors as a poet and a professor as a worker. As a result, it was revealed that there was a distance between a poet and a living person. Through the analysis, a study on pro-Japanese writers and their pro-Japanese works at the end of the Japanese colonial rule is not merely dichotomized into resistance and collaboration. Research on pro-Japanese literature should always be sophisticated.
