This study was conducted (1) to identify the positioning of major medical tourism destinations(South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, India, Mexico, and Brazil) based on important selection attributes using positioning map and (2) to provide proper marketing strategies for South Korea to target potential U.S. medical tourists in the presence of competitors. Online survey was administrated to potential U.S. medical tourists who were interested in medical tourism abroad and 310 responses were analyzed using frequency analysis, descriptive analysis, KYST, and PROFIT(PROperty FITting). The results of the study found that the preferred medical services included dental, cosmetic surgery, and medical exam; physician referral was the most preferred source of information. Quality of care, hygiene, potential for saving, and legal and regulatory environment for patient protection were perceived highly important attributes to select a medical tourism destination. The results of positioning map showed that respondents perceived South Korea, Singapore, and Thailand as similar medical tourism destinations, Mexico and Brazil as similar ones, and India as independent. Korea was first-rated on economic stability, stability of political culture, legal and regulatory environment for patient protection, quality of care, hygiene, and tourism opportunities, but she was ranked lowest on accessibility and potential for saving. Managerial implications were provided.
