This study is an empirical study on economic effect caused by brain drain of local students educated in Daegu into Seoul area. The number and proportion of high school graduates in Daegu who entered universities located at Seoul area have shown an increasing trend while the level of academic ability of freshmen who registered local universities lowered. The opportunities to be placed at the jobs in Seoul area for local university graduates have decreased since the 1980s. According to this study, the sum of consumption and production loss caused by the brain drain of local students in Daegu is estimated at over 200 billion won a year. External effect due to human capital loss brought about a negative effect on local economy, amounting to 400 billion won a year. To avoid the economic loss caused by brain drain, support for local universities is a necessary condition. However, the effectiveness of such support comes into reality only when economic concentration at Seoul area lessens and local economy activates.
