Purpose: Analyzing construction and characteristic of discourse in a Korean language textbook for lower grades of elementary school(from 1<SUP>st</SUP> grade to 3<SUP>rd</SUP> grade), this study tried to find ways and supplement points for lower grades in elementary school to use discourse smoothly. This study was conducted to analyze every sentence in 12 Korean language textbooks for lower grades of elementary school(from 1<SUP>st</SUP> grade to 3<SUP>rd</SUP> grade), as described below. Methods: 1) The number and kind of sentences 2) The construction of sentences(simple sentence and complex sentence) 3) The number of Eojeols in sentence 4) Classifying discourses as pragmatic function Results: 1) The number of sentences increased as students advanced through school. 2) Classifying the construction of sentences it was found that simple sentences were used more frequently than complex sentences. Especially, as advancing through school, the use of complex sentences increased in the text while the use of simple sentences appeared in question answering parts. 3) The number of the average Eojeol in a sentence was 6.63. 6 to 8 Eojeols accounted for the highest percentage. 4) As a result of classifying discourses as pragmatic function, answer and explanation accounted for the highest percentage while developmental expression accounted for the lowest. Conclusions: This study tried to provide an indicator for lower grades of elementary school and children with poor language skills. It compared to peers to improve the ability to use discourses tried.
