Purpose: Syntactic ability is one of the essential elements of literacy development of school age children. This study aims to analyze the Korean textbooks of elementary 1-2 grade in 2015 Revised National Curriculum to provide basic data regarding syntactic characteristics for literacy mediation of school age children. Methods: Sentences in Korean textbooks of elementary 1-2 grade were categorized by sentence ending. Then, it was categorized by simple and complex sentence by the relationship between subject and predicate, and then the subcategory of complex sentence was analyzed in-depth. Results: As the result of analyzing 2,272 sentences, the most common type of sentences in accordance with sentence ending was declarative sentence(54.05%), followed by propositive sentence(25.31%), interrogative sentence(13.07%), imperative sentence(5.33%), and exclamatory sentence(2.24%). Also, as for the classification of relationship between subject and predicate, frequency of complex sentences(69.06%) was higher than simple sentences(30.94%). In complex sentences, embedded sentence(67.40%) was more frequent than conjoined sentence(58.46%). As for the embedded sentence, adnominal clause(58.46%) was the most frequent sentence type followed by adverbial clause(23.01%), noun clause(15.10%), quotative clause(2.85%), predicate clause(0.58%). Also, as for the conjoined sentence, the subordinate conjoined sentence(50.47%) and coordinate conjoined sentence(49.53%) showed similar proportion. Conclusions: Based on the result, the study suggested including sentences frequently shown in textbooks to mediation goal in order to support reading comprehension and writing of school age children. The study is expected to be utilized as reference in mediation process of language evaluation of normal school age children and children with language learning disability.
