Desirable leisure activities can relieve people from a sense of dehumanization and self-alienation in our modern society` but an improper way of using leisure time can create the contrary result. Far a positive utilization of our leisure time, we need a more systematic study of recreation. People have, studied leisure from a sociological perspective but have not analyzed its recreational aspects. Focusing on recreation as a desirable way of spending time, this study aims at investigating the various aspects of recreational sociology and its theoretical framework from the scientific approach of recreational sociology analysing its function and characteristics. The result of the study of a scientific approach to recreational sociology was as follows; 1. It results that recreational sociology, as a study which examines the rules of social behavior from the view of recreation and the related fields of sociology, is a science which studies the relationship between the fundamental social units and the social processes which appear in many recreational settings. 2. This study also shows that various recreational problems of modern society can be explained according to the basic principles of sociology such as functionalist point of view, political economics and critical theoretical point of view, symbolic interactions point of view, symbolic and linguistic paint of view. 3. It divides recreational sociology into four fields of scientific approach; recreation and social system, recreation and social organization and group, social, demographical and situational factors which influence the recreation experience, and, recreation and socialism. Therefore, this study helps not only the understanding of recreation and the culture of leisure in Korea where the study of the sociological approach to recreation was insufficient, but also in classifying the field of study and providing a theoretical frame of approach.
