Among sexual minority groups, transgender people are those whose gender identity is different from their biological sex. They are one of the stigmatized groups in society where the cultural logic of gender binary is dominant. Prior literature points out that transgender people’s gender identities are shaped by the gender binary. However, one knows little about the social process by which they construct their identity. Drawing upon the in-depth interview data with 15 transgender persons in South Korea, this study examines how the participants construct gender identity. The social stigma and institutional oppression on transgender people force participants to internalize a gendered image of transgenderism, which is shared and reinforced in transgender communities. The gendered transgender norms leads the members in the communities to distinguish from each other, which results in self-alienation. At the same time, however, participants participate in constructing an alternative gender identity accepting a variety of gender and sexual orientations by reflective interactions with each other. While limited, furthermore, participants reconstruct their communities as more open to identity choices. Findings suggest that the social process by which participants construct their gender identity is an outcome of their adaptive responses to the social pressure of the gender binary.
