Recast is known to work differently from other types of feedback, due to its dual properties of positive and negative evidence. Learner factors in cognitive abilities such as working memory capacity (WMC) have been reported to highly correlate with noticing of recasts. Opposed to these prior findings, it was hypothesized in the present study that recasts can be noticed by learners regardless of their working memory capacity if the length of recasts is modulated as a partial recast, and if the target structure is chosen from the one that learners are in the stage of developing it into implicit knowledge and is in reasonable salience. To test this hypothesis, a study containing interactional tasks and tests that measure implicit and explicit knowledge as well as working memory was conducted with 29 Korean adult learners of English. Results showed that the participants in both recast groups improved their implicit knowledge of the target structure, and that development was shown to be irrelevant to the individual differences in working memory capacity. Another important finding was that this development in the implicit knowledge was significant in the increments from pretest to delayed posttest, suggesting the delayed effect of recast.
