This study was conducted to explore the meanings of the Ryukyu(琉球) space in pre-modern Chinese literature after Suishu(隋書, 636) and how these meanings are inherited or denied. Ryukyu was described as an uncivilized land in Suishu, where cannibalism was practiced and human skeletons piled up. These images have been reproduced through various history and geography books for almost a thousand years and become almost the only knowledge system related to Ryukyu. In the 14th century, Ryukyu became the "Chinese World Order" when offering tribute to Ming (1368-1644). However, the "Ryukyu" known to the public was still not completely far from the "imaginative geography" system established in the Suishu era. Beginning around the 16th century, the Ryukyu Sahaengrok(使行錄, record of diplomatic mission) appeared to change the Chinese perception of Ryukyu significantly. Unlike in other literatures, Chen Kan(陳 侃)"s ShiRyukyulu(使琉球錄,1534) portrays Ryukyu as a civilized and edified state divested of the old uncivilized customs. However, due to his lengthy adventure story, Ryukyu still symbolized a faraway foreign land that could only be reached through adventure. Zhang Xueli(張學禮)’s Zhongshanjilüe(中山紀略, 1663) in Qing(淸,1616-1912) and Xu Baoguang(徐葆光)’s Zhongshanchuanxinlu(中山傳信錄, 1719) also tried to describe Ryukyu as an idealistic society or the orderly civilized country that ancient saints dreamed of. However, they also paid attention to Ryukyu"s unique foreign nature that was different from China. Their writing was a process of exploring whether the true ‘Ryukyuness’ was from it’s estrangement due to it’s differences with China or the absence of Chinese civilization, or because of similarities with China. However, their search had to end in failure. This is because they imagined Ryukyu as a "Chinese other", which is a contradictory space, rather than as a ‘China of foreign country’.
