Currently there are over six thousand languages in the world. The United Nations has the following working languages: Chinese, English, French, Russian, Arabic and Spanish. Together with German and Japanese, these are referred to as “commonly taught languages” in China. Other than these are called “less commonly used languages”. China now has 67 programs for less commonly taught language, much smaller in number and scale than commonly taught languages. However, they play a pivotal role in many fields in China, a bridge linking the country with the rest of the world. As China’s Belt and Road Initiative has been promoted, there has been an increasing demand for less commonly taught language speakers, an urgency for a large number of less commonly taught language talents who develop a love for China, a vision, a proficiency, and intercultural competence as well as knowledge of international rules. In this context, there is a pressing need to develop qualified less commonly taught language interpreters that the international community seeks. Guangdong University of Foreign Studies now offers 19 less commonly taught language programs, in which Chinese-Thai interpretation teaching has formed a unique model. This paper attempts to present the syllabus, teaching content, methodology and measures, examinations and assessment of the Chinese-Thai interpretation program.
