Proverbs reflect many cultural features of the societies they represent, reflecting how a certain group of people think and behave. So, proverbs could be an ideal teaching material to serve foreign language learners to reach to their aim, which is the attainment to the communicative competence of the target languages and understanding the culture of the natives of those languages. Arabs are proud of having tremendous heritage of the Arabic proverbs and are using them very often in their every day life. Therefore, teaching Arabic proverbs would help Arabic language learners to communicate with Arabs more intimately and effectively. It also offers them to enter the secrets of Arabic language and presents the knowledge about history, philosophy, morals, behavior patterns of the Arab society. In addition, teaching Arabic proverbs characterized by their simple, concise and rhythmical features would make learners to learn the Arabic language more easily and interestingly, which will enhance the efficiency of learning the language. This study suggests using the experimental method which mediates between the subjective and objective methods to select Arabic proverbs for Korean Arabic language learners. It advises also that language teachers have to choose wisely from among the vast selection of proverbs to teach based on certain criteria; these criteria are the frequency of use of the proverbs, metaphoric transparency of the language of proverbs, minimum difficulty, similarity to the first language, appropriateness and relevance, the language level of the student, age of the student, the students’ objectives and motivations as well as the instructional objectives. Moreover, this study presents some possible models of teaching Arabic proverbs in the classrooms.
