The purpose of this article is to examine the necessity and the possibility of sociolinguistic factors for the study on the life history of the Korean language. First of all, this article looks into the formation process of the concept of ‘life history of the Korean language’ by reviewing the background of its appearance and the transition of its study precedent. Secondly, the subject and the methodology for the study on the life history of the Korean language are clearly founded by referring to the study on the life history in the field of historical science. And then, the matters of common interest and methodology will be found between the study on the life history of the Korean language and the sociolinguistics. Finally, this article is concluded by presenting the sociolinguistic factors which are useful for the study on the life history of the Korean language.
