The purpose of this study was to examine teachers' interest and understanding of bioethical issues and their perception of bioethics teaching in secondary school education. The questionnaire was constructed and designed specially for this study, and administered to secondary school teachers of five subjects including Science, TechnologyHome economics, Korean, Moral Education, and Social Science. The results are summarized as follows. First, most respondents had interest in bioethical issues, but their understanding about these issues was relatively limited. In particular, teachers showed limited understanding of ‘issues on medical treatment' and ‘issues on biotechnology' in which they had the highest interest. Second, bioethical issues which they wanted to teach and which they had taught at classes were different by the subject areas. Third, limited availability of teaching materials, limited class hours, and lack of teachers' knowledge about bioethics were found to be barriers which prevent them from teaching bioethical issues. The implications of these results, for the improvement of bioethics teaching in secondary school education, are discussed.
