The biology teacher appointment examination on a nationwide scale comprises two parts, first a multiple-choice test and second an essay writing test. We conducted a questionnaire survey of 255 candidates for the first test and 60 candidates for the second test to analyze the perceptions that candidates may have about the examination. For the first test, the candidates perceived that the allotted testing time was insufficient and the length of the test items were deemed excessive. They also perceived that biology contents were difficult and somewhat improper to the content areas of test criteria. As for the second test, the candidates recognized that the types of questions were somewhat inappropriate and the number of test items was insufficient for effective evaluation of various areas. In addition, the most preferred ratio alloted to the domain of biology education to biology content were 30% : 70% in the first test, and 40% : 60% in the second test. To improve the examination for appointing secondary school biology teachers, it is suggested that the number of test items be increased and the problems should cover a broader range of biology contents which are appropriate to the test criteria. Also, the difficulty level of items tested needs to be adjusted to a suitable level, and the length of the items needs to be shortened.
