Ennin, who entered Tang with 17th Embassy to Tang Dynasty in Jun. 838, made a pilgrimage to a mountain of Wutai(五臺) instead of a mountain Tiantai(天台) pilgrimage which was the original purpose after remaining at Tang for the pilgrimage in search of the law by parting with the party of the embassy to Tang dynasty, travelled in India for about 10 years through Chang’an. During the time, Ennin had a vivid experience including politics, economy, society, culture as well as Buddhist pilgrimages in Tang, and left his experience to 『Ennin’s Diary』. Ennin, who broadened his various experiences and knowledge in the process of the travel in India, left the detailed records on Tang culture, in particular, on the seasonal folk custom. As being able to be examined through Ennin’s records, China’s seasonal folk customs such as the winter solstice, the last day of the year, greeting the New Year, the onset of spring, the 105th day after the winter solstice(寒食), are the origin of Japan’s seasonal folk customs and the grgualr annual events, and Japan in Heian(平安) Period held ceremonies similar to China’s such as the winter solstice, the last day of the year on the basis of the seasonal folk customs introduced from China, and as being able to be identified in the example of the 105th day after the winter solstice, the seasonal folk custom which is different from the own country’s traditional concept makes an appearance of being excluded from annual events.
