Report Errors
In this study, the social and cultural role of religious institutions and their facilities in fostering arts and culture were examined. Religious organizations possess institutional and physical infrastructure and has history with supporting artistic production and education in general. An in-depth examination was conducted on the management cases of the “Media-Artists-Church” Culture and Art Network, an organization which focuses on Protestant churches that actively engage in the arts and culture of Korean society through sponsorship, non-profits, and provision of physical facilities. The Q-Methodology was ueed to identify the patterns of actors’ perception in each of the cases. Understanding the patrons’ perceptions of the arts and culture is important for designing the direction, continuity, and expansion of the arts sector. This study can be divided into three categories: Communicational, Social-Participational, and Religious-Interventional. The characteristics of each category hold the potential to, in various combinations, contribute to the enhancement of the art and cultural field in Korea. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the importance of a multi-point analysis of the pressing issues of the art and culture in Korean society and proposes guiding principles for future studies.
