The purpose of this study was to examine readers’ subjectivities. More specifically, it aimed to identify the types of book readers according to their subjectivities such as evaluations, attitudes, propensities and values shown toward the book reading policies. Data were collected by using Q methodology. 36 statements were used as Q sample. 30 persons, constituting P sample, were selected from those who are interested in book readings. The analyses showed that book readers could be grouped into 3 Factors according to their subjectivities. People grouped under Factor 1 could be called as “the readers requiring the expansion of public infra structure”. This group stressed the function of public libraries for promoting book readings. This type of readers thought that the construction of public libraries and the expansion of library services would help people read more books. People grouped under Factor 2 could be called as “the readers requiring the promotion of book reading movements”. This group firmly regarded the book reading movement as a critical instrument for activating book readings. They agreed that book reading movements must be backed up by the advertisement of mass media such as TV, radio, newspaper, magazine, and others. People grouped under Factor 3 could be called as “readers emphasizing the importance of public education”. This group regarded the teachers’ active role in a formal education as an invaluable instrument for activating book readings.
