This study focuses on ‘meditation play projects’ as a way to nurture creativity in children. In particular, this study looks into how meditation, in the context of meditation play projects facilitates creative expression when children engage in art activities. Meditation play projects were found to help reduce children’s anxiety and experience peace of mind. A peaceful mind greatly aids in nurturing creativity. In general, creative people tend to be emotionally stable, flexible with diverse interests in life. Therefore, emotional stability leads to higher creative expression ability and meditation meets such emotional needs. Through meditation play projects, children discover the fact that they are closely connected with outside world, and not so frequently concentrating on themselves. Meditation practice in the projects allow the children to observe internal and external phenomena as it is. The subjects of the study were five and six year old kindergarten children. 20 children were in the experimental group and another 20 children were in the control group. For a ten week period, meditation play projects were used as an intervention. According to our observation, children showed higher self-confidence in their work and higher ability to concentrate during drawing activities, through the use of meditation play projects. Compared to the control group, the meditation play project children where more skillful in describing movement in their drawings. We found that the experimental group were imaginative and focused on things that truly impressed them. They also showed richer self-expression, for example, dealing with drawing space appropriately, while using more of a variety of colors in their paintings.
