The aim of this paper is to report the current situation of Korean education concentrating on the University of Tokyo. In addition, I will report the state of research of Korean language at the University of Tokyo briefly. There are three different kinds of Korean classes as indicated below, (1) Classes for first and second year students as an optional required subject*. (2) Classes for first and second year students as an optional subject. (3) Classes for third and fourth year students. At the University of Tokyo, the number of students enrolled in class (1) is low, considering the amount of students at the University. Although the number of students in classes (1) and (2) is increasing, the opportunityto study Korean in their third and fourth years is lacking due to the few courses available. I believe that this lack of courses is a problem that must be looked at. From my survey of the students taking Korean classes, I found that the three most popular responses to the question asking what was the motivation for taking the Korean courses were; interest of Korea, traveling to Korea, and the fact that Korea is the closest country to Japan. The responses indicating ‘an interest of Korea’ were correlated with an interest of the language, history, and culture, rather than politics or the economy in most of cases. Only a few students thought learning Korean would help them practically in the future and the vast majority were studying Korean out of a sense of curiosity. In 2002, a Korean major was established in the Graduate school at the University of Tokyo. This shows that the university has made a commitment to developing experts in the Korean language. I believe that this move by the University of Tokyo is a positive one and I expect thatas a result, it will produce many experts in the field of Korean language studies.
