The current study reports synchronous online exchanges between an intermediate Korean class at a U.S. university and an English class at a university in South Korea in a one-to-one videoconferencing project which was designed to foster the language learners’ development of linguistic competence as well as intercultural communicative competence. The results show that language learners can benefit from authentic experiences which promote linguistic skills and intercultural learning through collaborative activities using videoconferencing with native speakers of the target language. Specifically, the Korean language learners pointed out that participating in the videoconferencing project significantly improved their linguistic skills, especially vocabulary and fluency in their spoken Korean. As for intercultural learning, students shared a consensus in that the videoconferencing project helped them observe the same or similar things from different perspectives, and thus they re-visit and re-evaluate their own cultural aspects. Throughout the comparisons between the two different cultures, students strived to comprehend how different cultures are intermingled with each other, and thus how they are conveyed to the learners. The study looks at students as “empowered learners” who pursue more autonomy and authority in their own development of linguistic competence and intercultural communicative competence. It also portrays how the teachers participate in the learning process as lesson planners, tech consultants, and “intercultural partners.” A new curriculum development and a learning model of Korean language learning using technology are also discussed.
