The purpose of this paper examines Byeong-Am’s understanding of Neo- Confucianism laying stress on criticizing Hwaseo School’s theory of mind. Hwa-Seo claims that principles(理) can move from the point of view emphasizing on activity of principles. Hwa-Seo and Seong-Jae don’t acknowledge that material force(氣) can rule the roast principles. They only concede that principles can rule the roast material force. They also insist that illustrious virtue(明德) is principles. On the contrary, Gan-Jae claims that principles don’t have activity and material force only has activity. Byeong-Am, meanwhile, insists that illustrious virtue is not principles. He criticizes Hwaseo School’s theory of mind according to recognizing Gan-Jae’s theory. However, Byeong-Am uses different arguments and expressions with Gan-Jae’s for criticizing Hwaseo School.
