This paper examines the ways in which Sarah Ruhl’s Passion Play employs mise-en-abyme as an integral structural feature as she dramatizes the politics of repetition and difference. Structurally, Passion Play is a cycle play comprised of three parts set in historically different periods. Moreover, this play is metatheatre embedding the process of staging a play-within-the-play which functions as an inner play, and three outer plays which are constituted by a complex fusion of the theatrical realities of the characters. This kind of the repetitive scenes of respective part can be regarded as mise-en-abyme associated with the double mirror effect. The repetitive images as mise-en-abyme bring about different lacunas in the process of mirroring the objects, which are integrated into a coherent whole in the final part of Passion Play. The contradiction and contrast caused by the difference-producing repetitions foregrounds historical and ideological significance in each period. Ruhl’s play thus produces a unique parody in each periodical paradigm that contains differences based on similarities.
