Discussions over basic income are ongoing not only around the world but also in South Korea. Basic income refers to the regular payment of an appropriate amount of money to an individual. With this focus of the debate, scholars rarely asked about the different effects of basic income on female and male citizens. Due to this presumed gender neutrality of basic income, there is a strong tendency within feminism to hesitate to actively analyze basic income worldwide. However, due to the problems of the social security system based on paid work, two different approaches have formed, one of which expects that basic income will contribute to the improvement of gender equality and focuses on its possibilities, and the other one believes that basic income will strengthen the gender labor division and pays attention to its limitations. This study seeks to find a stepping stone for the discussion in South Korea by exploring the representative arguments of each approach. To this end, this study in chapter II examines basic income proposals that assume gender blindness based on the concept of gender neutrality. Chapter III analyzes the arguments of Carole Pateman who focuses on the possibility of basic income as a means of the democratization of citizenship including women’s freedom, and of Kathi Weeks who regards the demand for a basic income as a starting point for a post-work society. The following chapter IV looks at the discussions of Anka Gheaus, who predicts that basic income will be a threat to gender-symmetrical lifestyles, and the arguments of Alison Koslowski and Ann-Zofie Duvander, who expect that basic income will bring a return to the single person breadwinner model even in Sweden. Finally, chapter V discusses the direction in which the feminist discussion about basic income should go forward.
