(Background and Purpose) Space upcycling is a method of adding value by efficiently utilizing and reinterpreting the out-of-function space. This paper examines the characteristics that the space upcycling effectively shows nowadays in conjunction with the retro trends, where regeneration has become the primary issue in the urban space. The shift in the perspective from the demolition phase of the existing building cycle to regeneration is due to the emergence of consumers with value-consumption characteristics, as well as environmental issues, and as the consumer’s taste varies, the trend of retro-design is accelerating in space likewise. The best place to see this phenomenon are commercial spaces (especially cafes), which are closely related to the lives of consumers. This paper examines the emergence of these spaces and studies factors that influence consumers through research about representative examples in the Seoul metropolitan area. (Method) First, the definitions of upcycling space and retro-design are established using the existing research, and the justification of this study is presented by ensuring that the two concepts are correlated. The case study is then conducted with a newly defined analysis model, focusing on the keywords space upcycling and retro-design derived from existing research. Both keywords were analyzed separately during various case studies. The researcher examined the history and composition of space through a literature survey and then conducted a case study. Finally, the outcome was derived by comparing and analyzing the figures of elements in each space case together in various ways. (Results) The aesthetic characteristics of the upcycling element and the cultural sensitivity of the retro-design, the cultural characteristics of the upcycling element, and the local culture of the retro-design were analyzed as factors showing close association, respectively. This means that when the retro-design is expressed within an upcycling space, consumers are pleased with the storytelling process of experiencing and understanding the past of such space using the five senses, and in addition, the upcycling space should be based on a deep understanding of the community.(Conclusions) Retro-design allows consumers to experience emotional re-examination, so it is necessary to effectively discover, redeploy, and experience new historical spaces that they have never encountered in the upcycling process. However, the lack of practical related factors at a time when environmental problems emerge is an important issue that the upcycling space must overcome. In addition, when the process was performed based on an understanding of the community, consumers finally could give the space sincerity.
