Some research findings indicate that school dropouts face a significant chance of entering a criminal career, but other efforts have failed to find dropout effect. In this study, we analyzed the changes on delinquent behaviors before and after dropping out of school. In particularly, this study identified latent groups based on delinquency of school dropouts and examined characteristics of each latent group. Latent class analysis was applied using 638 adolescents' data from School Dropout Youth Panel data conducted from National Youth Policy Institute. We found that school dropouts face a lower chance of committing delinquent behaviors. The analysis of the patterns of delinquency changes before and after school dropout confirmed the differences between serious crimes and status offenses. Results supported a 3-class model for school dropouts' serious delinquency transition across school dropout; a 4-class model were supported for school dropout's status offense transition. Specifically, the latent classes of serious delinquent behaviors transition were 'chronic offenders', 'non-offenders', and 'restrainer'. The latent classes of status offenses were 'chronic offenders', 'non-offenders', 'pornography addicts/heavy drinkers', and 'heavy drinking and smokers'. Multinomial logistic regressions were then employed to examine predictors that distinguish these groups, and factors including causes and timing of dropout, relationship with school teachers and friends in school were considered. Our results indicated that delinquent groups were distinguished by causes and timing of dropout and sex of adolescents. In particular, it was found that restrainers whose delinquent behaviors were reduced after drop-out were more likely to have reported low school attachment and to have dropped out of school due to problem behaviors as compared to the non-offender group. Implications for preventive interventions for school dropouts are also discussed.
