Suspense is regarded as a key response that induces the audience’s interest and attention in a story. Existing theories on suspense, however, are widely varied in their conceptualization of suspense as well as their explanations of the factors that generate suspense. This paper proposes an alternative perspective that resolves this issue. In contrast to theories that understand suspense as a psychological response for avoiding negative outcomes, this paper attempts to understand suspense as a psychological phenomenon that is motivated by both the desire to avoid negative outcomes and to pursue positive outcomes.
Based on this framework, this paper conceptualizes suspense as the affective state that the story’s audience experiences when it feels close to approaching a climactic outcome, regardless of whether that outcome is positive or negative. This paper proposes three types of suspense-evoking events within stories that induce such responses.
