The purpose of this study is to provide guidelines for efficient space use and maintenance of academic libraries that experience difficulties in normal operations due to COVID. This study identified various spatial compositions of academic libraries through literature review and conducted field surveys of libraries of five universities in the Boston Metropolitan Area in the U.S during COVID. These resulted in the following suggestions. First, an academic library should operate a registration system for the use of space, equipment, and materials. This is critical because it is important for the libraries to identify demands for space and equipment and to trace infection routes. Second, contacts between users should be minimized. It is necessary to maintain social distance through self-services, contact-free services, one-way traffic, and the reduction of the number of furniture pieces. Third, employees and users should be protected from infection. For this purpose, maintaining protocols for sanitization of equipment and wearing masks is essential. Fourth, exterior spaces such as outdoor terraces, piloti, and the courtyard should be actively utilized as extended library spaces. Furniture should be arranged six feet apart to be conducive to learning and community activities. There should be an area for one-stop pick-up service of printed materials.
