This paper considered three reasons why Aguda was able to win.
First, Nüzhen were strong in combat. The men of the Nüzhen were brave and strong. Their order was strict, and the system of reward and punishment was clear. meanwhile, Nüzhen had strong cavalry, and the army was composed of people in close blood relationship, increasing efficiency of combat.
Second, Aguda’s strategic goals were clear. Before Aguda’s founding, his military was weak, so he ordered to mobilize a small number of soldiers to concentrate attack on one area, winning the victory, and extending their power. After his foundation, He divided his army into two ways to attack. Aguda also conciliated Bohai people, who accounts for a significant portion of the Liao Dynasty’s military power.
Thirdly, Aguda launched a pincer movement with the Song Dynasty with meeting her demands. Aguda took a cautious and neutral attitude toward Goryeo, conciliatory and sometimes threatening attitude toward the Xixia Dynasty. Aguda took a relatively flexible attitude toward territorial issues to isolate the Liao Dynasty.
