According to Caiyi’s thought, the nature of beauty is the rule of beauty(美的 規律) and the archetype(典型). The feeling of beauty, which is the attributes of objective things, is the recognition of beauty. Through this logic, Cai could argue that his aesthetics was a thorough materialism. Cai criticized openly Lizehou(李澤厚)’s aesthetics, that was not a materialism. Li was required to prove that his aesthetics was predicated upon materialism. To do this, Li created the conception of ‘Jid ian(積淀)’ and ‘Xinganxing(新感性)’, accumulated -sediment and new-sensitivity. Using these concepts, Li insists that his aesthetics is not an idealism but a materialism, not a subjectivism but an objectivism. Lastly, we considered the limit of Cai’s aesthetics. Cai thought that beauty was completely objective and so it should be a materialism. But Cai’s conception of archetype, the essence and standard of beauty, is a subjective and individual choice. One thing could have many standards of beauty, so as in dividual choices which standard, one thing could be beauty or not beauty. Consequentially, Cai’s concept of archetype or model is contradictory to his objectivism and materialism.
