This paper’s purpose is to reconstruct the theses of Lacanian criticism based on the Lacan’s theory since mid-1960s. Shoshana Felman’s analysis on the reading of The Turn of the Screw showed that the endless shift of signifiers without the signified imprisons the critic, who believed he was outside the work, into a labyrinth of mirrors without exits. Judging that Felman’s conclusion is meaningful but insufficient, this paper tries to reconstitute Lacan’s analysis of Las Meninas as a critical theory. The critic, stuck in what is considered the painter’s fantasy space, makes an effort to estimate the perspective space in order to escape there by seeing through the trick of the painting. However, Lacan points out that Las Meninas is the painting that cannot be rationally analyzed. Contrary to Felman’s conclusion, the critic does not get trapped in a maze of mirrors, but reaches a place without a mirror but with a window (which means asymmetry between the subject and the Other). When the critic accepts as a condition for a new criticism that he cannot escape from the state of being captivated with the work, he can be born as a new critic-subject, and the work can be re-created. In conclusion, Lacanian criticism can be understood as the work not only to track the shift of signifiers, but to re-create the work by finding fantasy and drive at the point where the shift stops.
