This study examines the canonization process of Minsu Ahn's 『Principles, Techniques, and Theatre Directing』, which has been evaluated as a canon in the field of theater directing education in Korea, and contemplates the educational significance and limitations of the book by analyzing its contents and composition. Ahn Min-soo had been working long period of time at the university theatre educa- tion field after successful career as a theatre director mainly at the Drama Center in the 1970s. 『Principles, Techniques, and Theatre Directing』 is a theory based book about directing that system- atizes his experience and method as a theatre director. Since its publication, it has been regarded as a canon in the related field. And a canonized theory or book must overcome its academic and prac- tical errors through constant critical review and expand the boundaries through this. Minsu Ahn's 『Principles, Techniques, and Theatre Directing』 is the first introductory book in Korea to describe the whole process of theatre directing in the combination of theory and practice, and its educational significance is important. However, the concept of directing theatre described in the book is limited to the form centered on English and American plays, which does not reflect the vari- ous methods of theatre directing that are being tried both at home and abroad in these days. In addi- tion, since there is no reflection for the relationship between theatrical directing and the social con- text of the time in the book, its limitations in theatrical directing education are clearly revealed. Therefore, it is now necessary to cooperate with the academia and the theatre makers to pursue book that introduces to theater directing in a new language which can contain contemporary changes while inheriting the significance of the above book.
