Up to this day, quite a few studies on Korean hyperrealist painting have been published. However, no research has looked specifically at what is arguably the most essential and vital element of the wider movement, the first-generation of hyperrealist artists in Korea. In this regard, this study primarily examines the formation and activities of the collective Fact and Reality (Sasilkwa Hyonsil), Korea’s first hyperrealist painting group, the characteristics of the paintings of its members, and identifies a new distinctive defining element, that of “anonymity.” To this end, the author collected and reviewed primary source material attributable to the members of the Fact and Reality and interviewed the artists with the main goal of reconsidering the characteristics of Korean hyperrealist painting that haven’t been discussed. Accordingly, this study analyzes the groups characteristics of form and content closely by analysing the major works by the four artists(Kim Kangyong, Seo Jeoungchan, Ju Taeseok and Ji Seokcheol) who created hyperrealist paintings within the Fact and Reality group.
In this study, the formal characteristics which their works show on the surface – hyperrealist techniques, partially enlarged composition, and neutral color schemes - and the background context of the ideas about the objects and scenes within the images that have been removed from mundane reality are understood within a larger frame of “anonymity.” This orientation allows this study to uncover the fundamental elements and unique characteristics that Korean hyperrealist artists have pursued from the perspective of an anonymous artists’ consciousness instead on the basis of the style itself. This approach goes beyond that of other approaches adopted by existing studies that have regarded hyperrealist painting only as a matter of the form of expression, and in this respect, this study aims to innovatively interpret Korean hyperrealist painting.
