In imperial China(221 BCE~1911 CE), there had been three commentarial paradigms for interpreting the Yijing(Book of Changes): (1) the imaginary and numerological method, (2) the philosophical method, and (3) the method of moral cultivation based on divination. Each of these methods was unique in rending the Yijing as a text that dealt with uncertainty. In this article, I will examine Jeong Yak-Yong’s(1762~1836) Yijing commentary by comparing his interpretation of Qian hexagram(#1) with those of Chinese exegetes in the Han period, the Wei-Jin period, and the Southern Song period. The comparison is to highlight Jeong’s ambition to combine the imaginary and numerological method of the Han period with the divination method of the South Song period. The combination, I contend, indicates Jeong’s special interest in the Yijing hexagrams as symbols of the complexity and serendipity of human life.
