The purpose of this paper is to examine the ways in which Anglophone researchers of different disciplines, such as linguistics, studies of writing systems, cultural studies, anthropology, enthnography, politics, have comprehended and discussed the Korean Alphabet Hangul since 2000. The importance and rationale of this paper can be reassured from the fact that preceding studies on this topic were pursued only until 2004. As a way to look at the background from which the 21st century discussions of Hangul may have evolved, I will summarize the perspectives of the four important scholars who appear to have led the discussions on Hangul in the English-speaking countries in the last two decades of the 20th century. They are Geoffrey Sampson, John DeFrancis, Florian Coulmas, and Ross King. My investigation about the 21st-century Anglophone studies on Hangul will start with introducing in brief scholars and their articles or books that deal with the Korean writing system from varied perspectives. Then, in the remainder of the essay, I will elaborate more in detail the ways that they describe the literate life of Koreans before the advent of Hangul, the creation of Hangul, the features of Hangul as a writing system, and the diffusion of Hangul. In general, it seems that the 21st-century discussions of Hangul by the English-speaking scholars succeed the discussions of their predecessors.
