This article attempts to pay attention to the ‘border consciousness’ that is revealed in the ‘space’ that is the background of the novel as a principle of the literary formation of Kim Kwang-sik’s work. One reason that Kim Kwang-sik’s work has not been noticed in the past is that he deviated from the grand narrative or ideology and delved into the lives of ordinary citizens. This is also the trend of postwar writers like Kim Kwang-sik who were born after the March 1st Movement and were educated in Japanese as their national language. In Kim Kwang-sik’s novel, Junggangjin, Tokyo, the student soldier escape route, Manchuria, the return route after liberation, Busan, and the return route after the restoration of Seoul (which is a space that is repeatedly reproduced in the novel), which are the backgrounds of the work in Kim Kwang-sik, share the same track with the life of the writer. do Therefore, it is worth paying attention to the fact that the ‘space’, which is the background of the novel, is a reproduction of the wandering life experienced by the writer.
The meaning of ‘space’ in Kim Kwang-sik’s novel can be divided into three main perspectives, focusing on the ‘border consciousness’ and can be discussed.
First, it reveals the self-dividing aspects of ‘being Japanese and being Korean’ in the colonial ‘space’.
Second, it expresses dissatisfaction with the post-war reality centering on the ‘space’ of the family.
Third, the standardized ‘space’ of the city embodies the desires and frustrations of modern people.
The ‘space’ classified in this way has a ‘cultural meaning’ in that it also contains the characteristics of the times due to the temporal difference in the creation of works. In Kim Kwang-sik’s novel, ‘space’ refers to the emotional state of the writer according to the times, and does not simply result in a place as a background. This is because, through this space, the ‘border consciousness’ that looks at the times is revealed.
