Fables include myths, legends, and folktales handed down through oral tradition, and are a sub-genre of oral literature. In a broad sense, it is a name that encompasses myths, legends, and folktales. In a narrow sense, it also refers to legends and folktales other than myths. In China, Korean folktales were first introduced in 1925 by Zhou Zuoren (周作人). This is closely related to the May 4th New Culture Movement.
Zhou Zuoren translated and introduced three fairy tales in YuSi(『語絲』) magazine. The The Legend of Joseon, which he introduced, is related to children’s literature and folklore studies, which have been of interest since the days of studying in Japan. The target audience of The Legend of Joseon was adults. However, it was also intended to provide children with the literature they needed by combining children’s literature and folklore, which they had always been interested in. Tamaki Miwa’s The Josun of Legend was translated as The Legend of Joseon by Qingye. The Josun Collection of Japanese Fairy Tales by Matsumura Takeo, published in Tokyo in 1924, belongs to the 16th volume of Japan fairy tale collection of the World Fairy Tale Collection series. It contains 27 fairy tales, and Wu Zhaoxi (吳藻溪) followed this order.
Zhou Zhouren introduced The Legend of Joseon as an interesting reading for children in connection with folklore and a good research material for understanding children for adults. Qingye sympathized with Zhou Zuoren’s ‘Child-Centered’ and introduced Joseon’s fairy tale literature in order to provide useful and interesting books to children. On the other hand, Wuzhao’s purpose is to emphasize Joseon as a oppressed nation, reflecting the trend of proletarian children’s literature in the 1930s, and to awaken the plight of China at that time. An important factor that enabled our narrative literature to be introduced to China starting in the mid-1920s was because it was written in Japanese and published in Japan.
