What has changed in this concept of ‘virtuality’, which has emerged in the arena of philosophical discussions through Deleuze? In an attempt to answer these questions, this paper intends to reveal two points. First, the word virtual is a term that expresses our thoughts about what exists, that is, the mode of existence of ‘Idea’ as an object of thought that defines existence. To this end, in 『Difference and Repetition』, I would like to analyze the process at which Deleuze forms a dialectic system as a virtual multiplicity beyond Platonism, Kantism, and Structuralism, and explain the occasion for introducing the concept of virtuality. Second, the concept of virtuality is often explained in the light of the pure memory suggested by Bergson, but in Bergson’s philosophy, as the virtual, what should be thought in the same context as Idea should be understood as the ‘tendency’ that life implies. Through this, the concept of virtuality should be placed in the dialectic, which is the logic for the overthrow of Platonism in Deleuze’s dialectic system, and the theoretical continuity of Bergson and Deleuze should be understood from the perspective of ‘life’, the name of existence including virtuality. I would like to emphasize that it is hoped that these discussions will contribute to elucidating the nature of the issues raised with respect to the concept of virtuality.
