Most research on calling has examined the relationship between calling and life/job satisfaction in general. However, very few studies have analyzed the effects of calling based on its different sources. This study examined the endorsement level of each source and explored the effect of calling on life and job satisfaction through different sources. In this study we divided calling sources into four categories by grouping the existing concepts of calling: external summons/destiny, duty/obligation, personal fulfillment, and prosocial motivation. Data (N = 305) were collected via online surveys from Korean employees who perceived a calling. They rated each source according to the level of endorsement they perceived. The relationship between each calling source and life/job satisfaction was analyzed along with living a calling as a moderator. Regression analyses showed that personal fulfillment and prosocial motivation related positively to life/job satisfaction, while duty/obligation related to neither. External summons/destiny related to only life satisfaction, and living a calling served as a moderator only in this relationship. These results suggest that Korean employees do not need to live their calling to be satisfied with their life and job, if the calling they perceived is for their own personal fulfillment or come from prosocial motivation. Thus, finding or doing a job that serves such internal sources as personal fulfillment and prosocial motivation is recommended in order to maintain happiness in life and career. In addition, the highest endorsement by Korean employees was personal fulfillment, following by prosocial motivation, duty/obligation, and external summons/destiny. Evidently, the source of calling leads to different levels of life/job satisfaction. Future research needs to explore this further.
